Mark A. Tarnopolsky, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P.(C)

Associate Professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario

As associate professor in the departments of pediatrics and medicine at McMaster University, Dr. Tarnopolsky is collaborating with the Avicena Group to advance the company's clinical programs. In this role, he provides the Avicena Group with expertise in the areas of nutrition and metabolism in neuromuscular and neuro-metabolic diseases and the effects of disease, diet and exercise on amino acid metabolism.

Dr. Tarnopolsky recently led a trial that evaluated whether one of the Avicena Group's drug candidates increases strength and fat-free mass in boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The positive results of this trial were published in the journal Neurology in 2004.

In addition to his current position at McMaster University, Dr. Tarnopolsky is also a member of the school's graduate faculty in the departments of medical sciences, cell biology, and metabolism, as well as the director of the neuromuscular and neuro-metabolic clinic, and clinical team director for neuromuscular rehabilitation in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation. He is the author of over 140 publications, has contributed to six books, and also serves on the editorial board of Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition.

Dr. Tarnopolsky's many honors and awards include the American Academy of Electrodiagnostic Medicine Young Investigator Award and M.R.C. Resident Research Prize from the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, and a certificate of excellence in undergraduate teaching from the McMaster Student Union.

Dr. Tarnopolsky received an M.D., Ph.D. in cell biology and metabolism from McMaster University.
